At Lord Lawson Academy we recognise not only the importance of allowing students to flourish academically but we also embrace our wider role in preparing them for their adult life beyond the formal examined curriculum. Part of our role in that preparation is ensuring that we promote and reinforce British values to our students.

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and considered them to be democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs. Here at Lord Lawson Academy we actively promote British values by challenging opinions and behaviours which are contrary to those values and providing pupils with the tools to become thriving members of the community in Britain and the wider world.

The examples that follow are an indication of some of the many ways we seek to embed British values at our academy, and should be seen as an indication of our approach rather than an exhaustive list.

DEMOCRACY

At Lord Lawson Academy the principle of democracy is consistently reinforced, with the democratic process being employed for important decisions within the school community and beyond, for instance the mock elections which we ran to coincide with the General Election of 2015. We also operate an electoral process for student positions of responsibility, such as School Council, Head Boy/Girl, Prefects, Sports Captains etc. The principle of democracy is explored in our Wellbeing Day programme as well as in History and Religious Studies.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

Within Lord Lawson Academy students are actively encouraged to make independent choices knowing that they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. As an Academy we educate and provide boundaries for students to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education. We promote the importance of Individual Liberty through:

  • A strong and varied programme of extra-curricular activities including our Enrichment programme.
  • Encouraging students to develop and voice their opinions on a range of subjects in a formative manner.
  • By offering students a range of pathways regarding their academic progression at Year 9 and Year 11.
  • Offering students a choice in the dining hall, within the boundaries of healthy eating.
THE RULE OF LAW

All people and institutions are subject to and accountable to law that is fairly applied and enforced, and this is the same for Lord Lawson Academy. We promote the importance of the Rule of Law through:

• Our code of practice in the form of LLOB7 for students and LLOB10 for staff.
• Marking, assessment, feedback, and homework policies set clear boundaries which are explained to students.
• Behaviour policy outlines a clear definition for behaviours in and around the Academy including our expectations regarding Attitude to Learning (A2L).
• Rewards policy links closely to our 5Rs + 1 to reward and encourage positive attitudes, behaviour and application.

MUTUAL RESPECT

Respect is at the core of our Academy ethos and is modelled by students and staff alike. The Academy promotes respect for others and this is reiterated through our learning behaviours (5Rs + 1) which permeate every aspect of our Academy. We promote the importance of Mutual Respect through:

• The Academy motto ‘Each other and our dreams’.
• Classroom code of practice outlined in LLOB7 for students and LLOB10 for staff.
• Our Home/Academy agreement.
• Consistent application of high expectations and conduct by staff and students throughout the Academy environment.
• A tutorial work programme which covers a range of topics concerning respecting others and oneself.
• Recognition of positive attitudes and behaviour through our Rewards policy.

TOLERANCE OF THOSE WITH DIFFERENT FAITHS AND BELIEFS

This is achieved through equipping students with the ability to understand their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity within the school community. All students experience a structured approach to spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) education through our tutorial programmes where global themes and cultures are explored. We have welcomed a representative from the Anne Frank Trust to speak to students for the last three years, and history students have had the opportunity to visit WWII sites in France and Belgium to understand the impact of historical intolerance. Within our Religious Studies curriculum we also teach the fundamentals of the main faiths of Britain and encourage understanding and acceptance of these. All our Year 7 students attend our Christmas Service.

PREVENT

Lord Lawson Academy fully supports the Government Prevent programme.
From 1 July 2015 all schools, registered early years childcare providers and registered later years childcare providers are subject to a duty under section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, in the exercise of their functions, to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”. This duty is known as the Prevent duty.
In order for schools and childcare providers to fulfil the Prevent duty, it is essential that staff are able to identify children who may be vulnerable to radicalisation, and know what to do when they are identified. Protecting children from the risk of radicalisation should be seen as part of schools’ and childcare providers’ wider safeguarding duties, and is similar in nature to protecting children from other harms (e.g. drugs, gangs, neglect, sexual exploitation), whether these come from within their family or are the product of outside influences.
Schools and childcare providers can also build pupils’ resilience to radicalisation by promoting fundamental British values and enabling them to challenge extremist views. It is important to emphasise that the Prevent duty is not intended to stop students debating controversial issues. On the contrary, schools should provide a safe space in which children, young people and staff can understand the risks associated with terrorism and develop the knowledge and skills to be able to challenge extremist arguments.
